Description

We all know that professional care-giving is a rewarding experience. However, sometimes the role of a pediatric hematology/oncology nurse comes at a cost. The cost of care-giving can result in low emotional reservoirs that can jeopardize the nurses' own sense of self, the ability to manage stress and can ultimately affect the quality and safety of patient care.  Nurses can engage in “preserving the wholeness of character” (ANA Code of Ethics, Provision 5), through actively participating in self-care that helps to build resiliency.  This workshop provides pediatric hematology/oncology nurses the opportunity to explore resiliency and self-care through self-assessments, individualized self-care planning and participation in a variety of experiential learning opportunities that strengthen resiliency by guarding against compassion fatigue, moral distress, vicarious trauma and burnout.

Participants will receive instruction on the following topics:

  • Self-inventory
  • Navigating the current practice environment
  • Stress
  • Loss and Grief
  • Compassion Fatigue and Burnout
  • Empowerment
  • Resiliency
  • Spirituality
  • Self-care planning

Objectives

  1. Consider the effects of their work on personal levels of stress, anxiety and coping
  2. Receive evidenced-based education regarding compassion fatigue, moral distress, vicarious trauma, stress and burnout
  3. Participate in activities that promote reflection, relaxation and restoration
  4. Develop their own plan for self-care management and resiliency building

Continuing Education

Attendees are eligible to receive 13.5 CNEs after completing the workshop, posttest and evaluation.
