Advancing Fertility Preservation: The Expanding Role of Nurses and the Power of Advocacy
Livestream Webinar: March 12, 2025, 11:00 AM EST
Presented by: Barbara A. Lockart, DNP, APN/CNP PC & AC, CPHON
Overview of the Session
Fertility preservation is now recognized to be a cornerstone of comprehensive oncology care, yet significant disparities in access and awareness persist. Nurses play an essential role in integrating fertility preservation education into routine care and ensuring equitable access for all patients. This webinar will provide an overview of the recently developed joint position statement by the Association of Pediatric Hematology/Oncology Nurses (APHON), the Oncology Nursing Society (ONS), and the Canadian Association of Nurses in Oncology (CANO), which underscores the critical role of nurses in addressing this unmet need.
The session will explore the principles and recommendations outlined in the position statement, with a focus on how nurses can:
- Advocate for timely and inclusive discussions about fertility preservation.
- Mitigate barriers through the application of diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) principles.
- Enhance interdisciplinary collaboration to expand access to fertility preservation services.
Participants will also learn about the expanding roles of nurses in fertility preservation, including patient and family education, care coordination, and participation in research initiatives. Case studies will illustrate how nurses can effectively address systemic barriers—such as financial, cultural, and logistical challenges—while fostering patient-centered care.
By aligning with the joint position statement’s goals, this webinar aims to empower nurses to drive institutional and policy-level change. Thus, ensuring that patients are informed of risk of infertility and informed of cancer options for fertility preservation procedures.
