The Evidence-Based Practice Grant Letter of Intent (LOI) must include the following information, with a character limit of 5,000 (approximately 750 words) for each of items 2 – 7, which will be submitted through the APHON grant portal:

  1. Title: Title of your project
  2. Background: Brief description of the problem
  3. Relevance: Relevance to pediatric hematology/oncology nursing
  4. Purpose: Specific project aims
  5. PICO(T) question: Population; Intervention/Issue; Comparison; Outcome expected; Type of studies/Time for achieving outcome
  6. Summary of literature: Summary of preliminary data or available literature
  7. Design: Description of the plan for implementation and data evaluation and analysis

    In addition, the application must include the following as supporting PDF documents:
  8. References
  9. Current financial support: List each funded grant or contract for the conduct of these projects and any potential overlap with the current proposal. If there are no other grants, state, “None.”
  10. Project team names and roles: List the names and project roles for the project leader and team members. Describe the project leader’s previous EBP project experience. Include a copy of the curriculum vitae for each project member. List the agency or organization’s administrative approver.

Format Specifications for items 8-10 submitted as supporting PDF documents

  • Font: Double-spaced, 12 points
  • Paper size: 8 ½” x 11.”
  • Margins: At least ½” margins (top, bottom, left, and right)
  • APA 7th Edition for citations, references, and formatting is required

AYA Transition | Staffing Ratios | Nurses’ Self Care | Central Line Care | Fever and Neutropenia Precautions | Ethical Issues | Survivorship | Functioning with chronic physical/emotional/mental conditions | Oral Care | Oral Chemotherapy Adherence | Palliative and End-of-Life Care

Added consideration will be given to applicants who submit projects that address the above areas of interest.


Mattie Miracle Cancer Foundation Research Grant Guidelines

The Mattie Miracle Cancer Foundation (MMCF) Research Grant Letter of Intent (LOI) must include the following information which will be submitted through the APHON grant portal.

  1. Title: Title of your project
  2. Standard: Specify which Mattie Miracle Standard will be implemented
  3. Background: Brief description of the problem
  4. Relevance: Relevance to pediatric hematology/oncology nursing and the relevance to the Mattie Miracle Cancer Foundation’s mission to ensure optimal psychosocial care for children with cancer and their families throughout the cancer trajectory
  5. Purpose: Specific study aim(s)
  6. Research question/hypotheses: Research question or hypotheses to be tested
  7. Summary of literature: Summary of preliminary data or available literature, if any
  8. Design and methods: Study design, summary of methods or procedures, and plan for data analysis, including power analysis (if applicable)

In addition, the application must include the following:

10. Current research financial support: List each funded grant or contract for the conduct of these projects and any potential overlap with the current proposal. If there are no other grants, state, “None.”
Please Note: **Secondary aims/analysis of currently funded projects are prohibited*
11. An NIH formatted biosketch should accompany the Letter of Intent for both the research study PI and any co-investigators
12. Please indicate the agency or organization administrative approver.

Letters of Intent will be evaluated by the APHON Evidence-Based Practice/Research (EBP/Research) Committee, the Mattie Miracle Cancer Foundation, and additional ad hoc panel members as needed, and submission of full applications will be invited for eligible projects. The decision will be communicated to the candidates no later than May 10th, 2024, and those who are invited to submit a full proposal will need to do so by June 24th, 2024, at 11:59 pm Eastern Time.

The Mattie Miracle Cancer Foundation will fund the grant based on the stated scope of work in the LOI and application. The grant will cover direct costs only; MMCF does not fund the PI’s salary, academic tuition support, or the purchase of a computer. The project leader must be an active APHON member, and the 12–24-month project must clearly address one of the Psychosocial Standards and advance hematology/oncology nursing practice. Applicants will be informed of the decisions regarding their applications as soon as they have been made by late June/Early July 2024.
