Berman Institute of Bioethics/Johns Hopkins School of Medicine
Shortages of chemotherapy and supportive care agents (CASCA) are commonplace in childhood cancer. These medications are part of lifesaving regimens for countless children with cancer. Many of the drugs in short supply lack viable alternatives. Among the US population, there exists a general lack of awareness of drug shortages in general and CASCA specifically; this lack of awareness includes health professionals. Given the pervasive nature of CASCA shortages, clinicians and hospitals must be primed to address shortages both in terms of mitigation and prioritization. Nurses will gain insight and knowledge about CASCA shortages, including approaches for mitigation and allocation allowing them to effectively and compassionately communicate with and educate patients and families about CASCA shortages.
