Description

Course Overview:

This course outlines a quality improvement (QI) study focused on reducing errors in the administration of Desmopressin (DDAVP) for patients. It emphasizes the importance of timely laboratory testing and identifies key barriers and interventions aimed at improving the process.

  • Key drivers of DDAVP challenge errors: Errors in DDAVP challenges are primarily driven by issues such as lab processes, inconsistent nursing staff training, and varied administration methods.
  • Interventions to reduce errors: The QI interventions included educating staff, ensuring families remain for blood draws, and synchronizing the release of blood samples to enhance the testing process.
  • Goals of the QI project: The aim was to decrease DDAVP challenge errors significantly, targeting a reduction from a high percentage to as close to zero as possible.

Learning Outcomes:

  1. Recognize key drivers that led to Desmopressin (1-deamino-8-D-arginine vasopressin) (DDAVP) challenge errors.
  2. Understand the importance of timely lab draws for patients receiving test doses of DDAVP.
  3. Identify barriers in obtaining appropriate laboratory testing after the administration of the DDAVP test dose.
  4. Integrate interventions that demonstrated a reduction in errors DDAVP challenge errors.
  5. Analyze and report data obtained following the incorporation of interventions to reduce DDAVP challenge errors.

Upon successful completion of this course, nurses will earn 1 NCPD. There are no pharmacology hours associated with this activity.
